John Proctor Essay
The audience now have conflicting emotions; there is confusion as although we know he has made a mistake, he doesnââ¬â¢t deserve to die for it, we also feel disappointed that Proctor has given into Danforth showing a weakness rather than power and bravery. The courts are relieved that Proctor decides to confess and they want him to sign a confession, Danforth explains why it needs to be signed ââ¬ËWhy, for the good instruction of the villageâ⬠¦ ââ¬Ë Proctor first shows signs of changing his mind ââ¬ËYou have all witnessed it- it is enoughââ¬â¢ Proctor is adamant that he doesnââ¬â¢t want to take his verbal confession any further. He says ââ¬ËI have given you my soul; leave me my name! ââ¬Ë he is in a desperate situation as although he has confessed to impiety he doesnââ¬â¢t want everyone in Salem to see the evidence of it. Proctor â⬠¦ tears the paper and crumples it, but he is weeping in fury but erect. He has resolved his dilemma and has made his final decision to hang. The audience feel empathy for Proctor however we are glad he has made the righteous decision, redeeming himself in the end. His final words convey his good sense of morals and his courage. He says ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. ââ¬Ë The audience agree with his decision as it separates him from the hypocrisy of others. It also expresses his honesty in direct conflict with Danforth who is completely corrupt and irrational; Proctor says ââ¬ËShow honour now, show a stony heart and sink them with it! ââ¬Ë It is a heroic end for Proctor showing his strength and dignity. By the end of the play some of the characters hold different views on Proctor. At the beginning of the play when Hale first arrived in Salem he was very enthusiastic about the witchcraft but throughout the play his views swayed towards Proctorââ¬â¢s explanation of the accusations. He realises that the witch-hunts are a consequence of dangerous pretence caused by a young girlââ¬â¢s vengeance. ââ¬ËIt is a lie! They are innocent! ââ¬Ë Hale is certain that this is fraud and he feels guilty for his earlier actions. ââ¬ËLet you not mistake your duty as I mistook my ownâ⬠¦. And where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. ââ¬Ë Hale knows he has done wrong and he is sincere and honest enough to admit his errors. As the play progresses we see a change in Elizabethââ¬â¢s attitude, at the very end of the play a lot of the tension between them is resolved. Elizabeth admits that she was also to blame for their difficult marriage; ââ¬ËIt needs a cold wife to prompt lecheryââ¬â¢ she has now fully forgiven him and they both realise their love for each other. Moments before Proctor hangs they share a loving, affectionate kiss He has lifted her, and kisses her now with great passion. Now that Proctor feels a genuine love and forgiveness he can die with an easy mind and with dignity. Haleââ¬â¢s condemnation and pleading with Elizabeth to save Proctor is a point of high dramatic tension as he knows that she is the only one that can change his mind. Hale pleads, ââ¬ËWoman, plead with him! Woman! It is pride, it is vanity. ââ¬Ë Elizabeth knows that she canââ¬â¢t take Haleââ¬â¢s advice as she knows her husband has made the morally right, honourable decision for himself. Miller uses Elizabethââ¬â¢s final statement to confirm that Proctor is a tragic hero. ââ¬ËHe have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him! ââ¬Ë This demonstrates that she cannot intervene because she canââ¬â¢t take away his honesty and make his imperative decision for him. This proves that Proctor is a tragic hero as he chooses to die with an honest conscience. Proctor refuses to collaborate with the evil of the courts. ââ¬ËGod does not need my name nailed up upon the church! ââ¬Ë He will not agree to his signed confession being shown to the people of Salem because he doesnââ¬â¢t want there to be any significant evidence of the lie he is giving. When Proctor reflects on himself, he is quite harsh. ââ¬ËI cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is fraud. ââ¬Ë He is blaming himself for the situation he is in now as it is a consequence of his affair with Abigail. As he realises his mistakes he begins to see himself as a fraud. The witch-hunt shown in The Crucible has a strong link to the McCarthy trials in the early 1950s, as both occasions created a vast hysteria. Both Danforth and Abigail are closely linked to John McCarthy as they are trying to gain power. Abigail was constantly manipulating the courts; therefore a consequent fear and hysteria is created and innocent people like Mary Warren, who get frightened and intimidated, start to betray friends. Millersââ¬â¢ message is trying to tell the audience to be aware of, and stand up to people like Danforth and Abigail and expose things before itââ¬â¢s too late. Also, that we should beware that a petty pretence can become extremely dangerous. As we observe, Proctor comes across as very self-centred at the beginning of The Crucible and he doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be aware of his mistakes- he is hypocritical and angry at Elizabeth for not forgiving him straight away for his affair, ââ¬ËYou forget nothinââ¬â¢ and forgive nothinââ¬â¢. Learn charity woman. ââ¬Ë However as the play progresses the audience experience a new, moral and powerful Proctor who notices his faults. He now understands his errors and thinks of himself as a sinner ââ¬ËI cannot mount the gibbet like a saintâ⬠¦ My honesty is broke. Elizabeth; I am no good man. ââ¬Ë I do not completely agree with the statement ââ¬ËWhat is John Proctor? I am no saint; for me it is fraud. I am not that man. ââ¬Ë Although he has sinned by lying and committing lechery with Abigail he doesnââ¬â¢t deserve to die as a consequence of Abigailââ¬â¢s vengeance. I feel that Proctor is being quite harsh on himself because even though he makes mistakes that put him in this situation, he redeems himself in the end by telling the truth and dying with dignity. ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. ââ¬Ë To conclude, I consider Proctor as more of a saint than a sinner. He is not a complete saint but I do believe that his courage, good sense of morals and power should be honoured and respected as he was a decent, noble man.à C20th Drama Coursework Essay: The Crucible Show preview only The above preview is unformatted text This student written piece of work is one of many that can be found in our GCSE Arthur Miller section.

A purely farcical character Essay
In this essay I intend to discuss the statement ââ¬Å"Petruchio is a purely farcical characterâ⬠and far I agree with it. I intend to explore Petruchios character further to determine whether he has other side to him apart from his comical side whether he is a purely farcical character. The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy, a farcical play with a lot of the humour being about the war between the sexes, which is shown in the major theme of marriage, and men trying to tame their women. Petruchio plays a big part in this with his wooing and marriage to Katherine. Petruchio is the main character in the play aswell as Katherine and he is also one of the main farcical characters who is often witty and farcical in his speeches is portrayed as a clown with a lot of comic scenes. They are quite slapstick humour as with his wedding outfit, his outfit shows him acting the clown. The description we get of his outfit is very comical and the image of the old horse. It is his wedding day and he doesnââ¬â¢t take it at all seriously. Another example of his humour is in Act 1 scene 2 where Petruchio and Grumio have a comic misunderstanding at the door. All these scenes are very silly and slapstick and show Petruchio as perhaps a purely farcical character, but there are other sides to him. Deceit is a major theme in The Taming of the Shrew, with many of the characters in disguise. Petruchio is one character who doesnââ¬â¢t swap identities with another character as we see with Lucentio and Tranio, but he does have a different disguise. He plays a role to tame Katherine and marry her so that he can be wealthy. He tricks her into believing he is a cruel man and he tells the audience this in one of his speeches (iv line 159-178). He tells them of his plans to deceive her and cure her of her shrewish ways and so she will become the dutiful wife and a lady. He does imply in this speech that he himself will also have to suffer in order to tame her (line 170-178) Petruchios character is quite deceitful and he does admit this to the audience. He is so deceitful he almost fools the audience into believing he is being himself. But he canââ¬â¢t be as he keeps informing them of his plans to deceive Katherine, so he obviously is not the man he portrays himself as. In the presence of his friends he is quite humorous as again with the scene where Petruchio and Grumio have the comical misunderstanding. With his friends he is more himself and is honest about what he wants, married, happy, and wealthy in Padua.

Design and construction of a prestressed concrete tank Literature review
Design and construction of a prestressed concrete tank - Literature review Example The principle behind the prestressed concrete tank is that the compressive stresses induced by the high-strength steel tendons inside a concrete member prior to the loads being applied will balance tensile stresses inflicted in the member during the service. It`s recognized that prestressing eliminates several design limitations and conventional concrete places on load and span and allows the building of roofs, bridges floors, and walls with elongated unsupported spans. With this in mind, architects and engineers design as well as build lighter concrete tanks without sacrificing strength. This principle behind prestressing in concrete tank can be illustrated in a row of books being moved from one place to another. Instead of vertically stacking the books and carrying them, they may perhaps be shifted in horizontal position by putting pressure to the books right at the end of row. Whenever sufficient pressure is applied, the compressive stresses are induced all over the entire row, an d so the whole row can always be carried and lifted horizontally at once. This principle has been applied to the design and construction of concrete tank. Concrete water tanks are broadly used in todayââ¬â¢s society as a results of the endless need to have potable water easily accessible. Concrete water tanks are used for several purposes such as the storage of potable water, rain water harvesting and even for agriculture irrigation. They are comparatively easy to construct and they have numerous advantages compared to other tanks of different materials such as plastic or steel. Concrete tanks have bigger life spans, they can always be built bigger compared to their counterparts, they donââ¬â¢t taint water and besides, they can always be buried underground. Having a concrete tanks buried underground performs an aesthetic purpose and a practical one since it keeps the water cool. Consequently, the tank will have much less algae growth. A lesser algae growth implies fewer pump p roblems. Normally potable water tanks are built with prestressed concrete for purposes of durability and water tightness. Literature review As with all sorts of liquid-retaining constructions the fundamental problem of the design is not simply one of securely supporting the load, but is of creating a form that stays liquid-tight under service conditions. Consequently, leakage where it occurs happens more regularly from defects in detail and/or workmanship than from direct result of an inadequate design. In the prestressed cylindrical concrete tank, the enclosed liquid stimulates ring tension in horizontal section and also generally some bending in vertical section. Vertical and Horizontal stressing are applied as obligatory to offset these effects. In a form of this kind, they have the advantage that the central concrete shell is exposed to minimum situations of stress under complete load from the enclosed liquid. The base of the calculations for structures of this sort is simple. H owever, the application results, in practice, to possible disparity in interpretation. The provided degree of restraint at the wall foot possesses a controlling effect on the allocation of stress in the tank wall. The
Critically evaluate the best practice in global supply chain Essay
Critically evaluate the best practice in global supply chain management at two firms of your choice in the fashion industry - Essay Example At present, fashion industry is an international and highly globalised industry where clothing could be premeditated in one country, contrived in another country and end up being sold globally (Choi 2012). In relation to this, two fashion industries: Gucci and Marie Claire have gradually grown to this level. They are among the renowned fashion industries that deal with shoes, belts, beauty products, hand bags among other fashionable products (Manlow 2007). During the manufacture of these products, a particular strategy is used that entails six principle procedures that incorporate global supply chain planning, global supply strategy and configuration, global sourcing, global distribution, global logistics and managing sustainable global supply chains (Cetinkaya et al 2010). Global Supply Chain Planning Distribution centres Gucci has one of the best distribution centres complete with everything that is necessary, the distribution of Gucci is designed around the needs of Gucci. Unlike other fashion retail chains such as Marie Clare, Gucci has different products for different regions. The distribution centres are designed to meet the needs of the Gucci. Fashion industry is very competitive and time and efficiency is everything if a firm has to be competitive and successful in this industry. To be able develop a way to compete in this way, Gucci has come up with a very important supply chain strategy. This strategy revolves around two main important things as follows: Incorporating the suppliers to have a compact value chain Gucci is a global fashion retailer and this means that Gucci has created a system where it is able to meet the global demand for is goods without missing an opportunity to sell to a ready market. To achieve this, Gucci has been able to come up with ways in which to make sure that they are able to have a compact supply chain. This means that Gucci has merged its businesses with suppliers to ensure that it is able to control the suppliers. As Coo k (2011) point out, keeping the supplier close to the business is becoming a common supply chain management strategy because once it eliminates one of the competitive issues that Michal Porter (2008) identified in his model of five competitive forces. This is the force of bargaining power of suppliers. Gucci, unlike Marie Clare has identified that keeping the suppliers close is a major way of ensuring an efficient supply chain that can be used to make sure that better services are given to the customers. Global outsourcing This difference between Gucciââ¬â¢s supply chain and Marie Clareââ¬â¢s supply chain may be as a result of different business models of the two businesses. For example, Gucci has a very big range of products with some products being more popular in different markets and unpopular in other markets. This means that the supply chain for a firm like Gucci most take consideration of this right from the suppliers through the distribution centres to the final custom er contact. Gucci has also made use of global outsourcing as a way to make it more efficient for Gucci to satisfy the needs of the customers efficiently and cost effectively. According to Schary et al 2007, at present competition globally is entirely stiff. Individual companies no longer compete as autonomous entities, but as supply-chains networks. In essence, companies no longer compete in terms of brand versus brand, but they compete in terms

The Summer of Sam Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Summer of Sam - Essay Example The film then cuts to a car driving through New York. In these opening scenes great emphasis is placed on the juxtaposition off sonic and visual elements to create impact and viewer interest. As the film advances it begins to assume more of a traditional linear narrative format. As it follows a man and his wife as they go into a nightclub, and the follows the man as he leaves and engages in intercourse with a woman he picked up there; they are ultimately interrupted by a mysterious car. The next scene at 7:32 includes another murder. Itââ¬â¢s clear that while the narrative appears to be centered around these characters, in reality the viewer has in part been placed in the position of the mysterious murderer, who hovers in the background throughout these narrative developments. The film then cuts back to the man in who has returned to the nightclub. These characters, in contrast to the murderer, represents the filmââ¬â¢s first developed parallel narrative structure. At 13:00 the film introduces the third narrative element, considering the life of Richie, a punk rock youth. At 20:25, the film then combines these parallel narratives as Richie and the man from the nightclub meet-up. At 30:00, the narrative then seamlessly gives way to an encounter between two cops and perceived Mafioso.

Analysis Of My Antonia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Analysis Of My Antonia - Essay Example But as the story progresses and he comes to understand the reality of the situation, he shows his appreciation for immigrants like Antonia by stating ââ¬âââ¬ËOne result of this family solidarity was that the foreign farmers in our county were the first to become prosperous". As Jim blossoms in his youth, he undergoes a lot of changes in his life especially the areas where his personal life is concerned. His experiences in the West are interwoven with his academic education which is what makes the story all the more interesting.Antonia to Jim is someone whom he respects and loves a lot. In fact, Jimââ¬â¢s memoir is titled ââ¬ËMy Antoniaââ¬â¢ and is dedicated to her, proving the depth of his admiration and love for her. His memoir is not just about the story of his childhood and his experiences but it focuses on Antonia and what she had meant to him. The beauty of this memoir lies in the ambiguity of love. Jimââ¬â¢s feelings and emotions towards Antonia are very stro ng and though he does admit his deep love for her, yet it does not explicitly advertise it. Jim takes pride in her strong physical appearance and her sexual appeal, but he is also very protective of her, from the other ââ¬Ëcreepy guysââ¬â¢ in the neighborhood. However, now and then he is filled with flashes of passion and this is evident when he tries to kiss her one night near the gate, while Antonia jokingly pushes him away. But, whatever his feelings were towards Antonia, it had a great impact on him for the rest of his life.... But, whatever his feelings were towards Antonia, it had a great impact on him for the rest of his life. The following lines testify Jimââ¬â¢s feelings for Antonia -"I'd have liked to have you for a sweetheart, or a wife, or my mother or my sister ââ¬â anything that a woman can be to a man" (4.4.7).à Antoniaââ¬â¢s influence over Jim helps to change his life. The impact is clearly evident when Jim states -"You influence my likes and dislikes, all my tastes, hundreds of times when I don't realize it. You really are a part of me" (4.4.7) Both Antonia and Jim have opposing characteristics. While Antonia is strong and decisive, Jim is mor e emotional, passive and indecisive. All the above points show that Antonia represents a part of his past which was simple, pure and innocent. Representing yet another part of his life which is his adolescence and adulthood is the character of Mr. Shimerda who was the father of Antonia, Marek, Ambrosch, and Yulka well. He was an intelligent and dignified gentleman who loved his life in Bohemia and hated his new life in America. Mr. Shimerda became heart broken because he could not adjust to the hard life on the farm. Jim took a great liking to Mr. Shimerda because he understood the sadness and exhaustion that he was experiencing by feeling alone in this world. Jim admired Mr. Shimerda and was

Apple computer company Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Apple computer company - Case Study Example It is actually the customers of a particular organization that maintains the status of the business' capability to exist within the commercial industries in the society today. Likely though, with the changing trends of economy in the global scene, The impending need to increase business resources today has actually been the main cause of failure among businesses in particularly generating the right amount of focus needed in creating customer satisfaction programs that would likely increase the capability of the companies in generating the needs of the customers in a much more reasonable perspective. Obviously, because of the many changes in the society today, it could not be denied that the systems of business operations handled by the current entrepreneurs in the different human communities around the world also follow a changing trend that is now more focused on generating profits for the organizations. Because of the financial demands of the current situation in the global economy, business administrations are already having a hard time allocating sources to support the needed balance in giving both the company as well as the company itself, the value that it needs to receive from the business operations that they perform daily in business. Ethical measures on the matter though particularly points out the need to be balanced in all aspects of business operations. ... Certainly, with all these considerations, it could be observed that Apple Company is able to provide its company the right kind of products that they need and they demand for. - Price Understandably, seeing to it that the customers receive what they want and what they need from the business means that the business needs to be strongly capable of handing matters of customer satisfaction seriously and conscientiously (Gitman, 2000, 13). Most often than not, sacrificing certain financial gains may be one of the key procedures needed to be considered in handling issues such as this one. However, although risky at some point, modern entrepreneurs see that generating the business capabilities in handling customer needs at a higher level of service and attention from the administration of a business organization generates more customers who are satisfied and are recurrently returning resulting to more gains for the business at that. certainly, it could be summed up to the claim that as the organizations focus on giving the customers what they want, they are then much more able to generate the profit that they need for continuous operation in the global market. To sum up everything, it has been noted by the authors Cunningham and Gunn, customers are likely the best source of business success in the society today. Understandably, the authors point out that the blood of each business organization today are their clients (2004, 17). It is through this understanding that entrepreneurs should actually be able to find a way by which to regulate their systems to make it possible for their clients to actually receive the services and products that they are due. It is only through this that
